Ohrid - The Roman Amphiheatre

Here are some pictures of the Roman amphitheatre high in the hills of Ohrid town.
Maybe you prefer a photo from the WS.
Theyre all somewhat similar photos. One was taken in the evening.

I have previously written that in the summer months Ohrid is quite crowded.
Perhaps I should nuance that by saying that by far most visitors can be found in the old town and along the waterfront. When you visit the higher located sights in the old town, you won't encounter that many tourists. As you can see in these photos.

A mathematician would presumably say that the number of visitors is inversely proportional to the elevation of the site on the hill.
For every 100 meters you have to climb on the hill, a number of visitors drop off :)

Information from the Bradt Travel Guide Macedonia:

The Roman amphitheatre is just over 2.000 years old.
However, it has been buried for centuries. In the early 20th century, trial excavations confirmed its location.
During the following decades the excavations were put on hold until the 1960s.
By the 1990s the amphitheatre was fully uncovered and in the summer it is used for outdoor concerts and perfomances.
However, I did not notice the latter during my visit in July, 2018

Always intriguing sights of ancient Roman ampheteatres, three sides on the posted photos - rightly chosen the main picture.
Good view far across the bay, half shaded and other part under the bright side light.

Hello Paul,
I have two photos of this theatre, taken on a dull day when there was nothing going on. One of them shows exactly the same angle as your blue hour photo. But there is one great difference. That steel construction above the stage, looking like a bridge, did not exist in 2009. Your photos make the the theatre and its surroundings look much better than in mine.

Hello Paul, built to last! I wonder if the Romans could ever have imagined that 2000 years later the amphitheatre would still be here?
This view gives us the best view of the whole amphitheatre, but I do like the 'blue hour' shot too.

Een mooi gezicht op het aloude amfitheater met daar achter het stadje, het water en de groene heuvels. De kleuren zijn sowieso heel aantrekkelijk hier, mede dankzij de vlaggen en het heldere licht.

Ik heb nog nooit dergelijk mooie foto gezien van amphitheater.
Prachtig uit de hoogte genomen, met een schitterend panorama beeld, over de stad en de bergen in de achtergrond.
Kleuren en scherpte maken uw beeld perfect.

Excellent view of this theatre in Ohrid. Good POV with some red roofs and the view of the lake. The Macedonian flag is always yey catching. I have some photos nut from the inside of the theatre. when I have time I am always tempted to go somewhere higher, against the trend you are writing about.

Hi Paul,
It seems there are a lot of attractive spots along the coast of this lake! This amphitheatre has such a great location that I would be probably not able to focus on the things happening on the scene but I would stare into the view behind all the time. Unless they do performance after dark when the view behind "switches off".

Hello Paul,

You shared a fine series of photographs, focussing on the amphitheatre. There would be surely different preferences depending on the style of the photographer but no-one can complain about any of them.
It's hard to believe that there is so much history in this town! It's almost possible to overdose on it!
This is a splendid amphitheatre which has survived for over 2,000 years! How good that it now being used for modern performances, which could ensure its upkeep for the next few years!!

It's a good idea to be able to calculate how much the number of tourists will reduce with height. It may be useful when choosing locations to travel too! ;-)
It's difficult to choose between the photos - I love the blue hour shot but I also really like the summer sunshine and colours in the main one.

Hi Paul.
A great panoramic view with the magnificent amphitheater in the foreground, which certainly has spectacular views with the city behind, its beautiful bay and its magnificent mountains in the distance.
The photos of the WS are equally extraordinary, in them we see how well prepared it is for use in shows during good weather, ideal for night photography.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
