Ohrid - Church of Sveti Jovan at Kaneo

The picture of Ohrid that most people recognize is that of the church of Sveti Jovan (Saint John the Theologian), built on the cliffs above the lake at Kaneo, a short walk from the old town.
The church seen from an elevated position with the lake in the background is the must-take photo for many visiting Ohrid.

And yet here I show one taken from a different angle.
The reason for this is that Im not 100 percent satisfied with my result of the 'classic' photo.
Secondly, I like this composition very much and after all, during my visit of the church there was no one else who took a picture in the same spot.

The church of Sveti Jovan was built in the 13th century by an unknown benefactor.
It shows signs of both Byzantine and Armenian influence.

Documents detailing the church property suggest that it was built before the year 1447.
According to archaeologists, some time before the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
Restoration work in 1964 led to the discovery of frescoes in its dome.
A fresco of Christ Pantocrator can be seen in the dome and other frescoes on the walls.

Hello Paul,
You could be proud of all these photos, but particularly the main one. It's very well composed, with the beautifully twisted tree used as a frame, and the low pov is a good change from the standard angle, as in the second WS (which is also well taken but not very original; I have that view too). As for the first WS I have no memory of seeing that crescent moon in 2009. It must have appeared later.
I was actually a little bit disappointed with this church. I was among probably tens of thousands of "Westerners" learning about it the first time through the movie "Before the rain" (from 1994 and very good), where it was beautifully filmed and made a strong impression. It seemed more ordinary in real life.

Hi Paul,there are three really beautiful photos, the main one shows the church from below among the trees in an original and different composition. Great view from above with the aquatic background even if there was not the best light, the blue hour then transmits a magical atmosphere with the typical lit street lamps, really very beautiful !! Difficult choice from the WS#1, which to have as main picture, the evening blue hour with the crescent made it more interesting.
Nonetheless, found a good angle under the big tree to show the old church under bright daylight.

excellent effet avec ce cadrage pour mettre en valeur cet édifice, belle architecture. Bien vu cet avant-plan avec ce tronc, bonne gestion de la luminosité et de ses contrastes entre soleil et ombres.

Hello Paul, One can't visit Ohrid without taking photos of this iconic church. Nice photos. I also have a view with lamps.
Here you chose an original POV. I like framing from the trees.

Great series of photos with this charming Byzantine temple.
Yes this it probably the only spot which I would be able to recognize from North Macedonia. Of course your main POV is so very different that I wouldn't think it is the same place at all.
Great composition with the tree trunk framing the church nicely. I see you have a more classical scene as well and even the blue hour version with the lamp which you mentioned already before.
Beautiful place.
I wish I could travel more to destinations like this when I retire but 1. I seriously doubt I will reach retirement age. 2. Even if I do, my pension will be rubbish because I moved so much in my life, 3. I see my health is rather getting worse. So I suppose I have to carefully select each and every destination.
Still TE is a great place to be -to learn about other people's experiences first hand. As long as they are as kind as you are.

We zien de kerk op deze manier vanaf een mooi lager gelegen punt, waardoor het gebouw extra indrukwekkend lijkt. De boom en overhangende takken vormen een mooie omlijsting op de voorgrond.

Mooi gecomponeerde foto, Paul. De boom aan de rand doet zijn werk en vormt een knappe rand/kader. Het lage standpunt geeft het kleine kerkje extra kracht en het blinkende kruis op de top doet de rest. Mooi!

Hi Paul.
I will tell you that for me the three photos are sensational, this main one has an ideal frame, with the trunk of the tree and its branches framing it, the one that shows us the church with the lake is equally beautiful with the view of the lake behind and finally the illuminated at night and the light of that lantern seems fascinating to me, the church is undoubtedly a jewel and deserves several photos.
Magnificent color that gives a lot of chromatic richness to the image.
Very good management of lighting and sharpness.

P.S. In Georgia I bought two fairly large kilims and they are very nice, but I have others from Afghanistan bought in Madrid that seem more elaborate and with a more intricate pattern, but they also cost me 4 or 5 times more expensive than those from Georgia.
