Flowering Phantasm
1200 Pixel Beta Version
We continue our walk along the objects of the Amsterdam Light Festival and encounter the Flowering Phantasm, designed by Clay Dorse Odom and realized by StudioMODO
A phantasm is an organism that only exists in our mind. This phantasm by Clay Dorse Odom is a hybrid creature that is difficult to figure out but has a certain familiarity to it at the same time. It can be a flower, a carnivorous plant or a beast. Flowering Phantasm is all of these things. However, it does not relate to anything in specific.
This interactive artwork reacts to sunlight and the presence of visitors. Watch, and see the flower pedals open and make the entire artwork glow, making you realize that we are connected to nature. Clay Dorse Odom
Clay Dorse Odom is an assistant professor for the Interior Design Program at The University of Texas School of Architecture. Next to this he is the principal of StudioMODO, a design practice in Austin that is specialized in design research. The combination of active practice and education and research resulted in a design scholarship. Odom mainly researches the material and fleeting immaterial effects of interior. Since 2013 he can be found in America, Canada, Europa and Australia with various expositions, publications, conference talks and lectures. (website Amsterdam Light Festival)

Hallo Rob,
Een indrukwekkend scherpe foto van dit kunstwerk, we kunnen alle haartjes bovenop bijna allemaal tellen zo haarscherp zijn ze. Het ziet eruit alsof een buitenaards object hier in het gras is geland.

Hi Rob,
The subject is well framed. Using an ISO of 4000 and a slow shutter sped is showing the details of of the flowerin phantasm. It also has a special effect on the colours. Have a nice day.

Hello Rob,
Reminds me of the sci-fi film 'The Day of the Triffids'! Excellent capture in conditions that were not at all easy.

Hello Rob,
My first reaction to this was that it looks vaguely like an oyster. Judging from your explanation it is not possible to fully describe this strange phantasm in just a still photo. It is a fascinating photo but the real adventure would be to see it change shape and colours as people come near it or the light changes. You did the best that could be done to capture its glowing parts in the dark surroundings.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Rob,
It is certainly a creature of the mind.
In my mind, it has taken on the appearance of a shell, a rabbit burrow, a target and each one covered in sphagnum moss! It's interesting that none of these images is darkly threatening!
It is a great idea to have a light festival during the dark months and you have taken a wonderful memory of it. There is no noise, a fine focal image and a good sense of depth.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Dag Rob,
U heeft opnieuw iets gevonden dat gewoon mijn oog zou voorbij glippen.
Maar prachtig in beeld gebracht.
Met de gepaste kleuren en mooie scherpte.
Goed foto werk, bedankt.
Prettige dag verder hier met natte sneeuwbuien,
John

BOnjour Rob,
Je ne sais pas au juste ce que c'est mais c'est trčs intrigant.C'est vivant, cela bouge et c'est coloré et lumineux mais surtout techniquement bien fait.
Amicalement

Hello Rob,
amazing how light can transform and create shapes, atmospheres and stories, here it was used to create an object/sculpture that interacts with people. I like very much the concepts of this Light Festival and the results they produced. You captured the details and the lights of this fascinating flower in a superb way, so that we can thoroughly study and enjoy it too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hi Rob,
Phantasm indeed makes me imagine what kind of lightform that could be. Just fantastic use of light, modern LED technology has probably made implementation easier.
And there's also enough light in the background to get some idea of surrounding environment.
