A week ago, I drove my bike to Sluis, (Netherlands in lock-down, but not prohibited for me as a border resident from cycling there) to photograph one of the gates (Important for our friend Paul VDV)
My photo also shows the tower of the belfry

Part of history

After the disaster year of 1672 the Dutch Waterline became much more important in the defense of Holland. The function of the lock at the 's-Gravelandse Vaart was considered so important that around 1674 the lock was built in such a way that the lock was placed in the fort. This situation lasted until 1878. Until 1878 the ships sailed from the lock just past the tower fortress onto the Vecht. The lock was especially important as a point for flooding. During the adaptation of the fort in 1878, the canal and the lock within the fort were filled in and the lock was moved outside the fort.
Around 2005 the moat around the tower fort was dug again and the remains of the old lock

I hope you like it.
