Mayhem & doubt
The Rotterdam Marathon 2008. The athletes seen here have run some 26 km and are already digging deep into their reserves, so they really need the water that’s distributed by a team of dedicated volunteers. When a group of runners arrives at the replenishment post, in a few seconds a lot of cups are transferred on the fly and things get chaotic. For some athletes it’s also a moment of rest. And of doubt.......a ‘bezemwagen’ (a van that’s used to transport runners who give up to the start/finish area) is parked nearby.
Some more information about the Rotterdam Marathon is here
The process: I was hanging around the replenishment post testing my love’s new superzoom and had great fun using it. Its range, its compactness its tilt and swivel LCD screen are great and engaging to use. Sometimes I wonder why I lug around a heavy dSLR with an arsenal of lenses.
The PCS3 work flow: I altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, USM-ed, added a frame and resized, sharpened the edges on a 50% transparent layer and did a gentle USM (1,1px, 21%) again on that layer.

Prettig weekend, Henk

Hi Bert (this time I'm getting it right! ;o). Good result using the super-zoom lens on this scene from the marathon. The tilted framing is quite a good choice to enhance the storytelling of the exhausted moment during 2/3 of the distance, and the drinking person - in posture, and orientation contrary to the stream of runners - provides an interesting storytelling focal point. Well seen and captured, have a good weekend.

Hi Bert,

Hi Bert,
An wonderful sports picture. You have really captured what it often looks like at such event. I really like your composition with one of the runners in focus during his drinking break while other runners are passing in the background. All the white mugs against the asphalt also makes the scene extra vivid. TFS and have a nice weekend!
Cheers,
Ulf

hello bert
i'm always amazed how you manage to balance your frame in crazy situations. the composition is busy, but still you manage to make me love it. all those cups on the street, confusion of legs and gestures, dynamic tilt.... clear mayhem rendition, friend :)
warm regards,
kristaps
ps. that superzoom of yours is doing a great job.

I'm not a great fan of the use of tilt, but here it serves to symbolically demonstrate how the runners would be feeling at this point. I like how the guy with the cup has stopped running to drink and is facing in the opposite direction to everyone else. Your new toy seems to be perfect for the job. Well done
Kath

Bonsoir,

Hi Bert. I love the tilt in this photo, you are telling us about a marathon, so somehow you add so dynamism to this still moment of the race. When you are so tired it´s logical to forget about the environment. Thanks and take care Bert!
