Race for the Little Tower

I interrupted my summer series for a picture from Washington to mark the inauguration of Joe Biden in America a couple of weeks ago, so why shouldn’t I do the same for a political photo from The Netherlands the day before our parliamentary elections. It is also a photo that has been waiting to get posted for a very long time.

The photo of taken in Den Haag (The Hague), home to the political heart of the Netherlands, het Binnenhof, which houses both chambers of parliament (First Chamber or the Senate and the Second Chamber or the House of Representatives, for which the elections are being held tomorrow) and the Prime Minister’s Office (Ministerie van Algemene Zaken, literally Ministery of General Affairs). The Prime Minister’s office is located in the small tower in the right hand side, called het Torentje. It has been used as such since 1982. So the question will be who’s going to inhabit that tower after the elections, but if the latest opinion polls are correct it will probably be Mark Rutte, who has been Prime Minister since 2010, as long as he manages to form a new coalition government in the coming months.
