Valkhof

After 111 photos its time to close last summers travelogue, there are other photos waiting to be posted as well after all. Like this one, taken on an early spring day in the city of Nijmegen in the east of the Netherlands. The city is the largest in the province of Gelderland and is located on the river Waal (a branch of the Rhine) and close to the Dutch-German border. It is the oldest city in the country and was originally built as a Roman military camp, which later became the town of Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum.

The photo was taken in the park called Valkhof, located at the site of a former imperial castle, originally built by Charlemagne. You can see here the chapel of the castle, which is one of the few parts that still stand today. It is called the Sint-Nicolaaskapel (St Nicolas Chapel) and dates back to the year 1000. The bridge in the background is the Waalbrug, which had the longest arch (244m) in Europe at the time of construction (1936).

Hej Lars,
Det är en väldigt fin kyrka och en fin komposition. Träd, gräsmatta och buskage ramar in bilden perfekt och bron skapar viss balans mot kyrkan. Du hade tur att det satt nĺgra pĺ bänken i förgrunden och att det stod ett par personer i bakgrunden och beundrade utsikten. Du hade tur med det fina ljuset ocksĺ.

Hello Lars, the sunshine enhances the scene , especially with the shadows from the tree falling on the walls of the chapel.
You chose a good point of view that enabled you to include the bridge in the background.

Hallo Lars,
Mooie combinatiefoto van oud en nieuw. Beter gezegd van 'heel oud' en 'nieuw' moet dan heel ruim beschouwd worden.
Doch vanaf deze afstand gezien, lijkt het toch een nieuwe brug.
Een kapel in een bouwstijl die ik niet meteen verwacht in Nederland. Ook niet in België.
Ondanks het feit dat deze kapel reeds 10 eeuwen geleden gebouwd werd, bevindt ze zich toch nog in heel goede staat.
Zeker wanneer ik vergelijk met de abdij waarvan ik recent foto's toonde en die slechts als ruďne terug te vinden is.
Nijmegen is waar ik woon echt wel een onbekend stukje van Nederland maar ik heb eens gelezen dat het een heel interessante en mooie stad is.
Dus ik ben benieuwd wat je nog gaat tonen.
Goed doordachte compositie hier. Uitstekende scherpte en helderheid.

if this is the oldest city in the country, it must be VERY old indeed. There must be wonderful old buildings to explore as well. its amazing to hear this was built in the year 1000, thats just mind blowing. and look how strong its still standing today. awesome. cheers
