Speed & Determination
Today the 25th edition of the Rotterdam Marathon was held under unfavourable weather conditions – rain and cold. Displayed here is the winner for the ladies, Lornah Kiplakat with one of her two front runners, near the half-marathon spot (21 km) on the Laan Op Zuid, near to our house. The fornt runner is Isaiah Kosgei Kipkemei, also from Kenia. He finished 35th (men).
In Rotterdam and other important marathons, the favourite athletes are supplied by the organization with front runners - ‘hazen’ in Dutch (hares) who are instrumental in keeping the speed nice and steady and cut through the wind for the athletes following them. The hares mostly quit the race at the 30 km sign, but some keep on running and sometimes even win.
Lornah Kiplakat is one of the fastest female long distance runners in the world. She is the current holder of the world records for the 10 Mile distance (50:54 in the Dam tot Dam, Holland 2002)and the 20 kilometer, (1:03:54 ) and amongst other marathon victories she won the Los Angeles marathon two times.
She was born in Kabiemit, Kenya in 1974. This village is located at about 2800 meters above sea level. Kabiemit is close to the better known town of Eldoret in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. She has the Dutch nationality now.
Rinie’s pic of the carrier of the red lantern of this marathon is here.
He arrived three hours after the two athletes displayed.
PCS tech: heavily cropped; contrast and levels adjusted; ran Noiseware; USM-ed; frame added and saved for the web.

Great shot, Bert, and good job cropping and handling the motion. I liked your note too. How did you keep you camera dry in this weather?

Hi Bart,
What a great action shot. You cayght perfectly their suffering expression, which is so common for Marathon runners. The fashin of athlets is a bit strange, tough ;-) Great capture.

Een mooie actiefoto! Ik heb vanochtend ook een stukje van de marathon gezien en herken die vrouw aan haar oranje haar :-) De uitdrukking op hun gezichten is erg goed en de zichtbare regen is ook leuk, mooi werk :-D

Wow, Bert, YOU got a good look on the runners! Very nice, and a great action, and a good display of the weather conditions!
It sure was cold!
I haven't seen the big ones myself, later I've been shooting at Blaak, with the backdrop of Piet Blom's cubics, but I have not seen the results yet because of my PC crash.

Very nice one, Bert - the determination of the runners in the adverse weather is really so well conveyed in this compelling study. By the athletes' facial expressions as well as by the way in which the rain registers against the dark skin and gear they wear. Good choice with the up-close cropping.

Hi Bert,
Prachtig deze actuele aktiefoto. Je kunt zo goed zien waarom het parcoursrecord en het wereldrecord niet zijn gebroken. In elk geval heb je een foto van de winnares. Nu haar handtekening nog.

This is a great shot Bert, capturing the exertion of these two runners. The close crop adds to the energy of the composition. Good sharpness even at 1/200th of a second with your lens wide open. You have a steady hand, as well as a discerning eye. Excellent work.

Zwaar gecroppet, maar toch erg gedetailleerd. Erg mooi en scherp actieshot. De concentratie en spanning is duidelijk van hun gezichten af te lezen. Op het juiste moment gezien en geschoten!

This is a fine crop, Bert and a fine photo of the runners. There is so much tension in them and so much stress. They are exerting such a determination and such a feel of being run to their limits, especially in these conditions. They may not have been the best conditions to race in or the best to stand by and watch in but it helped create more of that feel of determination and exhaustion in the image. The textures and colors are very good in this image, very real. Nicely done.

La lumiere ici est faible du a cette forte pluie mais le resulatat est bien present et cela pour le plus grand p^laisir de nos yeux car le fond est ainsi beaucouyp mieux mis en valeur.
