Photographer's Note
Hasty Replenishment
April 9, Rotterdam Marathon 2006. This pic is taken after the athletes ran some 22 km and passed a replenishment point on the Laan Op Zuid. I tried to convey the feeling of dynamism and frenzy here, the athletes changing course, sometimes missing the filled cups that are handed to them, motorcycles speeding by with the press, coaches and referees.
The pro-athletes don’t use cups, they drink form bottles, mostly given to them by their hares. Displayed here is Isabel Eizmendi of Spain and her hare Javier Núńez , she finished 3rd ladies (general: 46th) in 02:31:51. Javier Núńez finished 42nd men (general: 51st ) in 02:32:58.
A close up of the handing over of a cup is here, in Rinie’s last year’s Marathon pic.
With my pics of last year’s marathon is some background information about the Rotterdam Marathon here and here.
This is the first post of the Rotterdam Marathon mini series. The announced Montevideo high rise triptych will be posted later.
PCS2 tech: heavily cropped, altered the contrast, saturation, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, USM-ed , added a frame and saved for the web.

Hoi Bert,
Mooi gedaan.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen, NNO wind zwak, 4,7° C, stijgende barometer, zwaar bewolkt.

Hi Bert
Very nice action shot. The motorcycle at the right part is somewhat disturbing but I know how hard is these photos to take. The expressions of the athletes are very fine! Great job.

Hej Bert,
Ah, weer een foto van de Rotterdamse marathon. Mooi actieshot, dat wordt versterkt doordat die ene renner en de motor er slechts deels opstaan. Sterke kleuren ook, mooi werk!
Groeten,
Lars

Hi Bert,
Yes, you have succeeded in conveying a feeling of dynamic frenzy here...The colour, the drama, the rush to replenishment, all captured with great clarity. The portrait format is ideal here and really gives us a great sense of proportions. A very successful shot, Bert. First rate.

Hi bert, you certainly achieved your objective to convey the frantic frenzy at the drink post. Every second counts and just stay focused, despite the crowd, the motorbikes, the other competitors. (I sound liek a runner dont I - well I didnt even manage to run the 10km Rijnmond loop on Sunday. The first that I have missed for 4 years. Too much travelling and out of condition)
The guy trunign around is a gem - the sharpness of their taut muscles excellent.

HI Bert, strong moment. The interaction between the two, the guy looking back, is very nice, and as you say the frenzy of the is place, the cups on the ground the motorcycle. Although I understand what happened and that there wasn't much choice, I would have liked to see the woman's legs ;-) Nice muscles on her body!

Good detail presented in this tight compo of the runners Bert. A fine 'sport' shot capturing the incident very good.
