Town Hall in Poznan is situated precisely in the center of the city. It used to be the residence of city council. Just above the clock – every day at noon one can see goats.

Here is the legend about why goats appear every day at noon on Town Hall’s tower:

It all happened in September evening in 1551 when Town Hall was being rebuilt. Construction manager was Baptisto Qadro – Italian architect.

People in Poznan were very happy because many festivities were planned, because after a year of hard work Bartlomiej Wolff from Gubin was supposed to present new clock. The clock was a gift from council to all those who live in Poznan.

Chief cook Mikołaj was just finishing main dish for ceremony – a deer with vegetables. Suddenly meat felt into fire and all cook’s work was destroyed. Mikołaj was terrified because the clock was almost done and there was no main dish. He sent Pietrek – his assistant to look for new meat. Pietrek was running from shop to shop looking for new meat but everything was closed. He looked everywhere until he run into grassland surrounding city to sit and to think what to do.

Than he saw two little goats standing and eating grass. He didn’t think long and took goats to Town Hall not mentioning that he stole them. Goats used the opportunity and escaped from the kitchen. Pietrek tried to catch them but they were too quick and agile for him. Goats escaped and run on the tower and than on cornice beneath the clock.

In that time there was a big crowd waiting for provincial governor in front of the Town Hall.
Suddenly when governor was near the gate a woman came to him crying and screaming:
- I was robbed Sir, Pietrek cook’s assistant stole my goats and now they are probably dead and cooked.
When governor wanted to say something everyone saw goats beneath the tower’s clock.
There they are. Said woman: and they are alive !

The view was beautiful: Two little, white goats were playing on the tower. Pitrek and cook admitted to steal the goats. Governor laughed and forgave them their crime. He also decided that the clock should have new mechanism with two mechanic goats appearing everyday at 12 o’clock.
