The Return of the Desired
No, it's not the Second Coming of Christ. The Desejado, this statue, is the King Sebastian of Portugal (1554-1578), who is presumed to have died in the Battle of Ksar-el-Kebir, defeated by the King Abd al-Malik of Morocco, is expected to return in a foggy morning to save Portugal and establish the Fifth Empire. This enduring myth is known as Sebastianism and became kind of a feature of the Portuguese society: you don't have to worry to solve your problems, just wait for king Sebastian who will return from the battle field and he will bring you a bright new future. Mixed with fatalism, Sebastianism is a cultural trait that has hampered the development of Portugal since the Golden Era of the 16th century.
This statue in Lagos, southern Portugal, is the most polemical work of João Cutileiro, because it was a quite new approach to sculpture under the regime of Salazar (this dictator was one of the "Sebastians" of Portuguese history).
We are still waiting for the true Sebastian. Maybe he will come in one of these November foggy mornings. Or maybe Jesus Christ is already walking the streets of Lagos.

O Regresso do Desejado
Não, não é a Segunda Vinda de Cristo. O Desejado, esta estátua, é El-Rei D. Sebastião (1554-1578), que se presume ter morrido na batalha de Alcácer-Quibir, derrotado pelo Sultão Mulei Moluco de Marrocos. É esperado o seu regresso numa manhã de nevoeiro para salvar Portugal e estabelecer o Quinto Império. Este duradouro mito, o sebastianismo, tornou-se uma característica da sociedade portuguesa: não te preocupes em resolver os teus problemas, espera que El-Rei D. Sebastião volte do campo de batalha e te traga um novo e brilhante futuro. Misturado com o fatalismo, o sebastianismo é um traço cultural que tem dificultado o desenvolvimento de Portugal desde a Era de Ouro do século XVI.
Esta estátua em Lagos, sul de Portugal, é a obra mais polémica de João Cutileiro, porque foi uma abordagem completamente nova da escultura, ainda sob o regime de Salazar (o ditador que foi um dos "Sebastiões" da história de Portugal).
Ainda estamos aguardando o verdadeiro Sebastião. Talvez ele volte numa destas manhãs de nevoeiro em novembro. Ou talvez Jesus Cristo já esteja percorrendo as ruas de Lagos.
