Where the land ends..., a photo from Lisboa, South

Photographer's Note

Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is a cape that forms the westernmost point of mainland Portugal, and hence the westernmost point of the continental Europe.

It is located in Lisbon district, 40 kilometers west of Lisbon and 18 kilometers west of Sintra in the Serra de Sintra nature park. The cliff rises out of the Atlantic Ocean to approximately 140 meters above sea level. On top of it located a lighthouse and a tourist office. The cape is a very popular tourist attraction.

The Portugals greatest poet Luis Vaz de Camőes defined Cabo da Roca as the place "where the land ends and the sea begins".

Great viewpoint & composition - with the horizon placed high in the frame. The dark clouds & sea add a dramatic touch to the image, which is appropriate for this location.

The only thing I don't like is the drop shadow frame, but that's just a personal choice & it's not impacting directly on what is a fine photo.

A very dramatic sky which captures very well the kind of end-of-the-world feeling that places like this, Land's End or Cape Of Good Hope always conjure up (for me at least!). Picture has lots of depth (thanks to that sky) and is perfectly focused and correctly sharpened. I would have liked maybe to see the foot of the cliffs at bottom right, to judge how high the cliffs are and maybe get a better impression of the wildness of the sea.

Great shot,taken from an excellent POV.Great depth and nice to see the peoples silhouettes.I like verry much that the sea at the horizon has nearly the same color as the cloudy sky.

The pov is great because you show the whole size of this cliff, and the small people just reinforce its grandeur. The deep DOF that extends to the horizon is very dramatic too. Finally, fantastic colors and great shadows and contrasts.

I saw in your gallery that you like to shoot images showing a good clouds dynamic as on this one. I appreciate here too your good use of the ND to lighten the foreground and make it vivid despite the grey conditions. Your subject is interesting and the composition well thought to result in a very enjoyable image, I like it.
