Photographer's Note

Ponte Luís I is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world.

The government held a competition for the construction of a metallic bridge over the Douro River on a site that was adjacent to an existing bridge that it would replace. Téophile Seyrig had engineered the D. Maria Pia Bridge project nearby, whilst working as a partner of Gustave Eiffel. He now took sole responsibility for the new, major Luís I Bridge. The construction was begun in 1881 and the bridge opened on 31 October 1886 (the upper deck; the lower deck opened in 1887).

Hello Daniel,
This is a nice shot with an informative note. The bridge creates a nice diagonal through the shot which provides a sense of direction of the scene. The lighting is nice and the photo has good sharpness and detail.

spectacular view.
I had the pleasure to visit this beautiful town and walk on the bridge but I never found the way up to this POV. I am so jealous. Not only the view is fantastic but also you have captured it at an extraordinary light.

l'architettura di questo ponte ha trasformato la cittŕ, adesso domina la scena come a Parigi la Tour Eiffel, anzi, forse ancora di piů, viste le dimensioni in rapporto alla cittŕ.
Ottimo pov e splendida inquadratura, lo rende parte integrante della cittŕ.

Nicely composed from this location. I like the way the bridge leads across the bottom but brings me into the view of the city. It's also gives a good sense of scale of the pre-industrial town and the industrial era steel structure. The lighting is good, too.
