Édifié pour commémorer la victoire des Portugais sur les Castillans ŕ la bataille d'Aljubarrota en 1385, le monastčre des dominicains de Batalha fut pendant deux sičcles le grand chantier de la monarchie portugaise oů se développa un style gothique national original, profondément influencé par l'art manuélin, comme le montre le cloître royal, véritable chef-d'oeuvre.

The Monastery of the Dominicans of Batalha was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. It was to be the Portuguese monarchy's main building project for the next two centuries. Here a highly original, national Gothic style evolved, profoundly influenced by Manueline art, as demonstrated by its masterpiece, the Royal Cloister.

Pas facile de faire ressortir l'architecture de monument aussi grand. Pourtant cette composition est trčs bien et attire le regard sur la forme et le sens. L'angle de prise de vue, peu courant, convient parfaitement ŕ l'image. Dommage que les vitraux soit sur-exposé... mais c'est un détail.

Very nice POV on the King tomb. As a matter of fact I've got a similar composition in one of my early postings.

In this one we can feel the complexity and the beauty of this building very well. Just miss a bit more sharpness.
