I have weird fascination and love of frost and ice formations like this. I can spend hours looking at them not to mention trying to capture them with a photograph. This is really cool but what has happened to this image is a very common occurrence - underexposure caused by the in-camera (through the lens) meter. Your camera tries to judge the exposure setting required and in situations with large fields of white like this one it actually underexposes. The unwanted result is somewhat gray snow or frost which is certainly not what your eye saw. The solution is fairly simple. In spite of what your meter tells you, simply overexpose by 1-2 stops and keep checking your histogram to ensure you don't go too far and blow highlights. This will keep your whites as white as you need them to be :)
