Contrary to the place presented in my previous photo, views from the tower of cathedral in Basel are quite popular on TrekEarth. Nevertheless, I wanted to share my contribution.

I was not sure what to use for the title here: should I refer to the autumnal colors or mention the contrast of the old buildings in foreground with modern structures on the horizon. Speaking about the modern structures on the horizon: they were the reason I visited Basel many times. Most of the modern buildings in the distance belong to the pharmaceutical giant, Novartis. Considering the revenue in 2018, Novartis was the fourth largest pharmaceutical company in the world. Click here to see the source of this information. Novartis is a multinational company, but it started, and it has its headquarters in Basel. Similarly, Roche, the second largest pharmaceutical company in the world, again a multinational company but has its headquarters in Basel. These two Swiss companies are the first two non-American companies which appear on the list. American companies dominate the list pretty much. There are obviously plenty of smaller companies in this area but these two giants alone mark Basel as a prominent dot on the pharmaceutical map of the world.

I remember from my early childhood holding in my hands some medicines which were produced in Basel, even the packaging was impressive for a boy who grew up in a Communist country. Later, I became a huge enthusiast of chemistry and unlike other children I started to dream about becoming a scientist and saving the world. Hence my few visits to Basel.
