Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) at Moss Bank Park

The Black Swan is a Native of Australia and Tasmania and is also found in New Zealand, where was introduced. It's the world's only black swan, although its flight feathers, almost fully hidden at rest, are white.

The Black swan is closely related to the Mute Swan (C. olor) and the Black necked (C. melanocorypha) males construct most of the nest. Both male and female incubate and rise the young. The female lays a clutch of 5-6 greenish white eggs, which take 29-36 days to incubate before hatching.
