A quick shot taken 10 days ago during one of my weekly countryside walks with friends, here a flock of sheep being moved to new pastures along a track which we were walking.
With the advent of new and more powerful tractors, shepherds might perhaps be becoming a little more lazy - this farmer was driving these sheep along this farm track with his noisy tractor while we tried to stand as still as possible to prevent upsetting them. Although you can't see them in this photograph, he also had two sheepdogs following to prevent any sheep escaping behind the tractor.
ISO 100, 1/800 sec at f/5.6, focal length 55mm.

Hello John,
Nice to read that you still make these walking with your friends. The sheep look cute. I like such views, although I prefer to see the traditional shepherd. :). Very nice picture.
Great scene.

Hi John
A new way for the sheperd to drive the flock with his tractor, next time the tractor will be conducted via a GPS, but as you note 2 real dogs were helping, not sure they will be replaced by machines too!
Have a nice sunday

Hi John,
Quite charming view of this flock of sheep being guided with modern means. Backlight gives nice contrasts on the wool. Excellent framing. I'm a bit surprised to see that the tractor is Zetor. Zetor brand was once quite common in Finland, but I don't think I've seen modern models here.

Hello John,
This is a delightful rural shot!
I feel so envious as I have been trying, for years, to capture the sheep being moved, along the lanes, in my village! I even asked the farmer to alert me when he was doing the drive, but to no effect!
The sheep are perfectly placed in the frame, the one at the extreme left rallying the flock, whilst the two on the extreme right, ears raised, are wondering how safe it is to pass this group of statue-like bipeds!
The tractor is exactly placed and the light is glorious.
It would have been hard to improve on this, had you been able to set up the scene!
I hope you didn't upset the sheep by mentioning 'mint'!
Have a great day,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
A sight that is both unusual and charming at the same time. I like the lighting and well rendered natural colours. Well observed and very well realised.

Hello John,
The red tractor adds a "nice" (well... at least colourful) touch to this traditional farm work. At least this encounter gave you an excellent photo opportunity, and the light was very nice too. I would have found the noise of the tractor rather disturbing, and possibly so did the sheep. If the farmer is young enough to be in business for another decade or two he will probably be able to exchange his dogs for robots.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello John,
Yet I think that such a tractor is not very useful as help for a shepherd. A dog seems to me a lot more agile and flexible. Nice how the red of the tractor returns to the ears of some sheep.
I also had to think of a holiday in Norway and Sweden where we drove 5 times behind a herd of sheep or cows.
Excellent work
Have a nice Sunday, groet Rob

Ha-ha! Just a Collie tractor! Excellent photography, John. I like your funny idea and clever realisation. The sheeps look enough happy to walk with this Shepherd. My congratulations! Thumbs up!

Hello John,
Everyday I learn something new on TE.
The farmer has his has exchanged his horse, for 300 horses in his tractor.
The modern Cowboys with a tractor.

Hello John, what a great shot!
Those sheep in the front look to me as if they are talking to one another; I wonder what they could be saying?
Perfect point of view. The red tractor, of course catches the eye, and the background landscape completes this beautifully lit scene.
A winner.
Regards Jean.

Hello John,
This looks a bit like the lazy way of shepherding, but the red tractor is a very good addition to the composition behind the large flock of sheep. The bright autumn light is beautiful and goes really well with the natural colours of the background.

Hi John
i also enjoyed your last Norway shot, but this one is just too good to pass up on. When viewers look at it, i'm sure it creates a smile. I know it did for me. Your comment about the shepherds becoming lazy was very funny, good one. The only time I would use the tractor is probably when its raining really hard. fun shot, good story and memory, and of course the shot itself is well captured. cheers

Hi John,
quite a charming scene, very well captured. I suppose it is less amusing if you are in the car following this tractor :)
The sheep seem to be staying very close together and indeed my first question was if some of them may be left behind but you have answered this question already.
Fantastic daily life reportage, I love it!

Hello John,
beautiful picture, taken in the warm light of autumn. I like sheep, even more since I recently read "Glennkill", a novel by Leonie Swann, bestseller in Germany some years ago. In this novel, the sheep are able to talk, at least to each other, and the reader gets to know a lot of their thoughts about shepherds and the rest of mankind. Sounds a bit strange, but since I read the book I always have in mind the question how the flock of sheep may discuss the situation.....
In this case, they actually look quite satisfied.
Thanks for sharing!
Elvira
