Photographer's Note

Ok, hands up everyone who remembers the Tufty Club !

When I was but a lad, the road safety campaign of the day was The Tufty Club, the central character of which was Tufty, the Red Squirrel. I saw the pictures, learned the rhyme, ( look right, look lrft, look right again, and if its all clear, quick march ! ) but in intervening fifty years never really appreciated why it had to be called the Tufty Club.

Well outside my kitchen window this time last year, I saw this young fellow and all became clear ! Its all in the ears ! Doh !

Tufty seems to be doing well though all these years later, and now even has his own web site !

More pictures from our past here.

Red squirrels are quite rare in the UK, and under constant threat from the advance of the imported grey squirrel, which outnumber it approximately 20:1. It is more common in the north of the country, and especially, though not exclusively, favours coniferous forest.

A little information about the real red squirrel can be seen here
