Photographer's Note

last week i was on annual leave and was fortunate to be able to go camping in the mourne mountains for a few days. the weather was superb and i was able to take advantage of this to be at the summit of some of the mountains in the evenings to capture the sunsets. it did mean having to go back down to my tent in the dark, but it was worth it to see such dramatic light, even if it only lasted for a few minutes.

this was taken on the summit of slieve bearnagh just before sunset. the body of water to the left is the silent valley reservoir, while lough shannagh is to the right. the irish sea is just about visible on the horizon.

Hello Brian,

Good to see you back again. Obviously your work keeps you away from TE and probably also from photography in general but I'm pleased that you had a week off work and also some good weather in which to enjoy the outdoors. You have obviously made the most of your free time and, although this must have been very hard work climbing to this height (and back down in darkness!) your efforts have certainly paid off handsomely.

As with all great photographs (in my opinion at least) it is the superb light which makes this one so very special. The warm late evening sunlight coming in at low angle has illuminated the scene wonderfully, lighting the slight mist below and also bringing out all the details and textures in the foreground grass and rocks. And, of course, at this late hour it is also lighting up the undersides of those lovely clouds and instilling them with a wonderful warm glow.

Lovely composition, gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

I missed this post when you uploaded originally, and at my loss. What an incredible scene you have captured here. Truly this is a magnificent, nay, epic sight to behold and I can only imagine the sense of wonder to stand here in person and witness this. Hi Brian,
now I know your secret, to take a photo like this you probably have to be camping up there so that you can quickly react if a great light suddenly appears.

This is a spectacular work. The light is extraordinary and the effect of the setting sun and some fog and clouds playing together is so beautiful. The composition is amazing with the unique shape of the Mourne Mountains well captured.
I did visit the Silent Valley Reservoir as it was a great place for an easy walk. I so regret that I never went up the hills.
