Taken just two days ago during one of my weekly countryside walks with friends. This time we were walking through woodlands beside the River Tweed near Peebles and came across this beautiful "carpet" of bright little flowers. At this time of year we often see clusters of bluebells in woods - but these little flowers are actually Pink Purslane, nowadays a not uncommon sight in British woodlands - you can see a closer view in the lower image.
Pink Purslane (Claytonia sibirica) is non-native to the U.K.: it is native to Siberia and western North America. The flower was introduced to the UK in the 18th century in gardens, from where it has escaped and spread. It has been wild since 1830s. The leaves are edible, can be added to salads, and have an earthy beetroot flavour. They can also be cooked like spinach.
ISO 400, 1/60 sec at f/8, focal length 24mm.

Hello John,
I didn't recognize this flower, so I looked it up on the net and found its Swedish name, Vĺrsköna, which means approximately "Spring beauty". Isn't that very appropriate? It is very pretty in the close view and creates a fantastic carpet in the wider view. You have joined these two fine photos nicely together.
I wish you a pleasant weekend,
Gert

Hello John,
A beautiful photo of spring in the UK! The purple flowers look so wonderful. The lower picture is a perfect close-up with excellent sharpness and a nice blurry backdrop of green. The upper photo shows the wonderful carpet the many small flowers create in the woods fantastically. The sunlight was lovely as well.

Hello John, a lovely presentation, showing the location and the close up.
The sunlight brings out a hint of pink as the flowers bloom beneath the trees. I have heard of purslane, but didnt know anything about it, so thanks for the informative notes.
Have a good w/e.
Regards Jean.

Hi John, great show made by the nature in springtime, fantastic carpet made by these pink flowers that i never seen in my country, great large view while the macro isn't the top of quality because the different levels of flower prospects in front of the lens, only one is very very sharp. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello John,
wonderful flowers which you had seen during your walk. I like your pictures here very much. Especially the panoramic view over the forest seems to me be in a wonderland. The close-up view has a perfect sharpness and wonderful colors. Very fine contribution to TE. Tfs.

Hello John,
Oh, I can imagine you with your containers, collecting some of these for Yvonne to add to your Sunday salad! Both pretty and tasty!
I wonder, are they attractive to the bees? A carpet of flowers like that could be a gourmet dish to the insects.
I like how you have given us an environmental view of the flowers, showing how they grow amongst the trees, dappled with woodland shadows.
The close-up gives us details not evident in the previous photograph. The five petalled flowers have attractive, pink patterns and pink stamens. It's a fine example of shallow dof with a useful bokeh. (I don't think I have used the word bokeh for ages!)
Have a good day,
Bev :-)
