Fairy Dell is a very charming little park not too far from where I live. For a non-native English speaker like me, it sounds quite similar to a fairy-tale. Interestingly the word tal in German means a valley or a dell. The little stream which you see in this photo is called Marton West Beck and it is one of several becks which flow into River Tees.

In spite of British government advise to keep parks open for public, Mayor of Middlesbrough Andy Preston decided to do the opposite. His twisted explanation was that because people of Middlesbrough are poor and live in crowded flats they are more likely to get infected and die from Coronavirus, he decided to close the parks to make sure they have no place to go to exercise. I am glad I am not the only one who criticized this decision. The Guardian (a British newspaper) mentioned the case as well in this article here:

It seems several of city parks would fit easily into the private estate of Mr Preston and when it was brought to public’s attention, he decided to give the public a chance and open the Middlesbrough parks. How generous! And so, since Saturday we are allowed to visit parks for exercise as encouraged by the government, of course observing the social distancing. The parks are being visibly monitored by security. Car parks and play areas for children are closed. This seems quite reasonable. Interestingly picnics, sunbathing and any play with ball is prohibited…

Obviously with several infamous world leaders introducing new standards, I don’t have to explain that not always the smartest of us get selected for positions with power. It seems that independent media are seriously needed to closely watch decisions of people with power. It was so helpful this time.
