The Orkneys have a lot of ancient world heritage features. Not far from where we stayed are the Neolithic Stones of Stenness with some of surviving stones being in this photo.
They are possibly the oldest standing stones in the United Kingdom dating from around 3100 BC. A nearby farmer had to be stopped from demolishing the stones in the 19th century because too many people came for a look.
Once the Orkneys were taken over by Norsemen the stones became associated with Norse traditions and rituals which continued into the 18th century.
In the WS are a photo of the remains of a nearby neolithic settlement and some sheep near a standing stone.
