Photographer's Note

Wazzat!?

This was one of those reaction shots that I really like as much for what’s not in the frame as much as what is – the sight lines on some of the Red Arrows display were blocked at times by a giant screen to one side of me and by their various approaches in relation to surrounding trees. Blenheim is a beautiful setting for a display but more difficult for a photographer than an airfiled based display because of the sudden appearances from hidden directions and obstructions to sight lines. I was delighted to capture the various points of departure from the frame here rather than a spectacular but rather more predictable full formation – it happened somewhat surprisingly as I was shifting my position to catch their approach – luckily I’d already pre-focused so my finger was already half way down. This frame was at the limit of my lens – I’m afraid I don’t know the name of this manoeuvre but it’s quite a famous one that I think I've seen before.

The sky was fantastic by early evening - I'd been sky watching since early morning on a photographic walk down Oxford's canal and just knew we'd get interesting skies later in the day. After I return from my trip away for a few days I'd like to post a photo-essay about this event in colour. So tomorrow last B&W for a while!
