Photographer's Note
There was a full moon the other night. It may have been around 2 o'clock in the morning. The weather was very humid and there was a slight fog crawling from the sea. I was walking back home from a party (that explains the fact I forgot what was the camera settings – lol). Then all of a sudden this windmill popped-up in front of me and I couldn't resist.
I was pleasantly surprised the day after when I saw how the photo came out.
The old windmill is near the centre of Scarborough and is now converted into a hotel.
History: The windmill played a very important role in the English Civil War. When Scarborough was beseiged during the civil war in 1645 the windmill was used by Parliament's General Sir John Meldrum as an artillery observation post.
The present structure of the windmill dates originally from 1784 when Thomas Robinson was given the bayliffs authority to build a new mill. The sails worked until 1898 when a gas turbine replaced them. The mill finally stopped grinding corn in 1927 and gradually fell into disrepair. Over the next 60 years the mill had a variety of uses including storing seed and newspaper distribution.

Yes it's a very special and attractive light, moody and mysterious. Was this handheld? nothing like a few pints to steady the hand ;-)

Uhhh, impressive. I would like it a bit further away... just to have that gloomy feel :) But it is nice as it is

Linda foto. Gostei muito do clima passado, o B&W foi muito bem escolhido para esta composiçăo, o degradee também agrada muito. A nota está muito boa e explicativa. Parabéns.

Good capture in very difficult light. Well done. Would auto levels improve the tone a little? It may however lessen the mysteriuous nature of the picture.

nice ominous feeling to this picture. the scaling of grey across the picture is very nice. good exposure on it perhaps actually. I ran it across neat image and it really really cleaned it up a bit and made it very nice might want to give it a try. somethign as simple as neat image I think doesnt need a wk since it is a one step function but give it a try and see if you like it.

Excellent misty and moody shot. Great idea to take this at 2am with only moonlight. Good thinking and well thought out. Great job, and very informative note.

Great shot Robert! the fog almost turns it in a kind of ghosty place :) Maybe it really was a ghost after the party :))) A good note too, thanks!

WOW what a great musterious light! I would however like to see more of the foreground underneath as I think it is to hard cropped in the low parts. I also wonder how long the exposure was here?

Beautiful natural gradient that gives a sense of the passage of time and a midnight unveiling. The fog softens the straight lines of the Windmill and adds very nicely to the mood. Well done.

Robert, nice windmill standing out of the fog. If you can do this after a party at 2 o'clock in the middle of the night, what could happen if youre fresh and fit;-) ??
Beautiful shot.

robert,
i like this pic, the fog doesnt let you see what is behind the wind mill, os you give more attention to it,
