Brooding clouds over the farm!, a photo from North Yorkshire, England

Photographer's Note

Hello Everyone,

As I look through my window, thankfully the weather has improved from that in the photograph I am posting this morning!

Continuing my theme of moorland farmhouses, this one is quite near the village of Lothersdale. On the morning that I took this, the grey clouds were rapidly moving over and snow flurries were intermitent.

Despite the weather, there is something so very wildly beautiful about this area!

I would like to share with you a small section of Mark Moxton's book 'Walking Land's End to John O'Groats'. This is his what he recalls of the Lothersdale section:

Between the Moors

Ickornshaw
Thankfully the people round here are so wonderful that I'm managing to kick my phobia of the North into touch. I might think the moors suck, but the villages and the inhabitants are great and to me that's the most important thing. For example, as I wound down into Ickornshaw, one valley over from my destination of Lothersdale, a bloke who was packing his car by the side of the road looked at me and launched into a conversation, just like that.

'Can't believe today after yesterday,' he said sympathetically, looking at the sky.

'Well, you've got to take the rough with the smooth,' I said.

'Should be better tomorrow,' he said.

'Hope so,' I said, and that was that. It might have been a short snippet, but when you've just rolled down from a soaking plod through undulating grey misery, a friendly nod and a few sympathetic words can really put the spring back in your step.

Lothersdale
The same happened up the next hill, where I chatted to a farmer for a few minutes and swapped tales of walking and weather, and fortified by his promise that after the next field it was downhill all the way a not-quite accurate summary of the rest of the walk, but close enough I soon flopped into Lothersdale for a pint of Adams, a slap-up meal and a very friendly B&B. And that's where I am now, steaming myself dry in the corner of the pub, listening to the gentle babble of conversation down the bar and looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.

Hello Beverley

What a good POV !
The slope gives an interesting diagonal line to give depth. An unusual view, it's well seen.
The threatening sky creates a special atmosphere, and the farm seems to be so lonely in this landscape.
Beautiful composition.

This is a fine composition with a strong diagonal!
The elements are well placed in the frame and the house is a natural eye-catcher, surrounded by old trees...
A dramatic mood, maybe there is bad weather on the way!

Good Morning, Bev.

A very nice picture - stunningly sharp (as usual) with a fabulous sky. Good diagonal composition and my eye is drawn to that light patch of green just this side of the farmhouse.

Just a little pity that the eye is also drawn to that grey 4x4 car - just a minor niggle, but the picture might just have been a little better without it.

A very interesting note too!

Hi Beverley. It might be wildly beautiful, but your composition has tamed it. Even with the brooding sky, I find the scene restful and inviting. Maybe I feel this way after photographing today a threatening,dark and turbulent sky over my suburb The gentle diagonal, the subdued colours and those beautifully shaped trees (plus the car) all give a homely mood. Hello Bev,

This is a really classic composition.

A great sense of perspective, as the eye is taken from right to left by that strong diagonal of the sloping land, then on towards that light patch on the distant hills.

The two big bare trees and the farmhouse are perfectly placed against the stormy sky.

It may just be my monitor, but I find the image a little on the dark side - and perhaps I would like to see a bit more shadow detail.

I have just looked up the details of your camera, and I'm amazed how tiny it is. You produce marvellous results with it, and it must be so easy to carry with you every where you go.

Hi Bev,
Excellent POV creates this lovely sloping line across this lovely countryside image. Great depth is seen as we look towards the distant hills with their patchwork fields. Very nice soft colors this somber day in the country.

I love the strong diagonal of this one with the moor in the distance and a hint of a dale between. It's a classic thirds composition which works very well. The brooding sky is very typical but the little bit of blue adds an important touch of hope. Well done

Hello Beverley,
a classic compo very effective and well presented. This is the kind of compo I like the most with beauty of the english countryside enhanced by a dramatic sky and the beautiful oak (?) trees "protecting" the farmhouse. Excellent done!

A beautiful scene...love how you used the diagonal of the green slope in the FG. Also like the play of light on the distant fields. The weather I guess is truly English, but that's enhancing the mood here...and a very well written note which I enjoyed reading.

Hello Beverley, this shot reminds me of my roots in West Yorkshire.
I like the mood captured here,the farm and the stone walls and the patchwork of fields in the distance.
The clouds really set the scene.I like the diagonal composition, as others have also said,it defines the landscape,having walked many hills like this.
