The Khan, a photo from Ramla, Central

Photographer's Note

Khan is a place where caravans of the old days used to stop to change horses. They were placed about 40 KM from each other. Ramla was on the route from the port of Jaffa to Jerusalem.
Today unfortunately, the Khan is filled with garbage and trash. but the architecture is still visible. Few thousand bats that inhabitate the place add to the human waste, their own.
Very sad because this place deserves better.

This photo does a convincing job in conveying the sense of shame in letting such a treasure fall into a state of such ruin.This place cries out for some kind of restoration effort.
The photo itself creates a forceful mood but I would consider making a slight CCW rotation.

One would think that conservation efforts are undergoing for places like this but I guess people and governments have different priorities, especially in these difficult times. There's so much history inside these walls though, you could just feel it. I agree with Derek about rotating it anticlockwise.

I must agree with Derek and Ken about the awful loss to let such a structure go to ruins. You note describing the original use of this place brings images of a lot of commercial activity going on around this place.

Interesting documentary picture, not the usual kind of picture of places of age. Actually that's why I like the subject so much, it confronts us with the decay of time and ignorance. A real pitty. You did a very good job documenting this place Amitai!

Beautiful picture. I love the small hole in the background. Just a remark : the picture is a bit titled ; so I tried a workshop.

Such a shame that this place is in this condition. You should forward this picture along your note to the ministry of tourism and culture.
Its good that you documented this.
