Photographer's Note

Friday morning is generally the time for shopping in this country, before shops close by 2PM, for the whole weekend. This is just before the beginning of the Sabbath (Jewish Saturday), which in winter is about 4-5PM.

In addition to the large population of Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem, there are many communities scattered all over the country. This shot was taken in the old city of Safed, a.k.a. Tzfat or Zefat, in northern Israel (population 26,600).

Safed is one of the holy cities in Judaism (along with Jerusalem, Tiberias and Hebron), and it has been a major center for Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) for centuries.
