Photographer's Note
A tour group examining one of the monumental block tombs near the main entrance to the park and siq. This is the Bab as-Siq (entrance to the Siq / Canyon). I kept a safe distance from them! Rather than stand in the hot sun listening to a tour guide drone on for 15 minutes, I later looked up information here:
https://universes.art/en/art-destinations/jordan/petra/bab-as-siq
These are block tombs BD9, BD8 & BD7 from left to right.
"The monolithic monument BD8 was carved out of the rock together with the platform on which it stands. With its triple stepped pedestal, it is almost 7 metres high. The sides of the block are 4.5 m wide. The large step at the top was probably chiseled out later, which is why the usual crenellated frieze of this type of tomb is missing.
On the east side there is the access to a square chamber (2.6 m x 2.6 m) with two grave pits. Archaeologists discovered five round libation wells in front of the entrance.
On the top of the boulder from which the block monument was carved out, there is a burial pit (see photo above), accessible via steps hewn into the rock."

Exploring the ruins on my own, I was able to cover a lot more ground and was under no pressure to hurry back to a waiting tour bus. Plus sites I found boring I could skip and at interesting sites I could spend as much time as I liked.

Hello Chris,
The note describes my way of travelling well: Stay away from tourist groups, allow myself the right to skip certain sights even if they're supposed to be important, and spend my time according to my own mind. The group crowding in a small corner gives me an idea of the heat and the merciless sunshine at that moment. Well exposed strong light and harsh contrasts.

Ger

The group gave excellent scale to the photo, as we can appreciate the size of those blocks/rocks, Chris.
The yellow/brown desert colors contrast to the blue sky aloft, wonderful nature in an astonishing location.
Good evening,

Hi Chris,
in general I agree with you, however sometimes the tour guid takes you to interesting spots which you may miss, not having researched it well enough in advance and also I usually am too lazy to look up things later. However I agree that I prefer not to know the history as long as I can have more time to walk around. The worst is when they pull you into some shops and waste the time on that.
It must have been hot. Tourists are hiding away from the sun in the small shadowed area.
Very interesting spot.
Nature and culture are melted together here.
Very well done,
M

Hello Chris, the guided group standing huddled together in the shade tells us all we need to know about the heat. They also give us a clue as to the size of the rock structure.
An excellent point of view.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Chris
In this particular case, the polarizer was very useful to wipe out overexposure, adding details subtlety to the whiter lower rocks located on a sweet spot at the right-hand side.
We are behavioral brothers; for group outings my wife listens to the visitor's guide while I withdraw informally to take pictures!!
Cheers

Hello Chris,
I do remember the Siq of course but I can't remember how the entrance looked like.
You were there at the hottest time of the year. Many years ago I was there in July :) Also very hot.
Beautifully sanded rocks and the square rock building in the middle of the photo.
The group of visitors packed closely together gives good scale to the picture.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Chris,
I like this combination of colors: earth tones and deep blue sky. These monuments remind of Egyptian ones, but a bit more eroded.
Regards,
MT
