Photographer's Note

The Photography Museum was named after Osman Yaşar Tanaçan and one of the rooms had his life-size stuffed statue in it. His biography was also provided in Turkish, which I have abridged and translated:

Osman Yaşar Tanaçan had his elementary and secondary education in Eskişehir. He showed an interest in photography in high school and joined the photography club. He later enrolled in the Turkish Air Force Petty Office School and graduated in 1963. He worked as a Photo Intelligence Petty Officer in the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he wrote the Photo Laboratory Manual.

His first exhibition was in 1973, entitled “From Our Province, From Our Region” which was held in Eskişehir Akbank Art Gallery. This was followed by “Eskişehir in History and Today” and “Ataturk in 555 Photos” which traveled to many cities. In 1977 he helped modernize the Fingerprint Photography Laboratory and the Department of Motion Pictures of Eskişehir Police Department, providing training for their technical personnel. The same year, he encouraged the first photography competition, Amateur Lenses, in Eskişehir with the sponsorship of Son Olay (Last Event) newspaper, for which he wrote.

He taught photography at various institutions in Eskişehir and prepared Eskişehir Industry Photo Exhibition. In 1985 he founded the studio Sutan Photography, which stayed open until 2005, when digital photography prevailed.

Outside of photography, he was interested in theatre. While he was a teacher at Eskişehir Public Education Center, he lead the Theatre Club and directed many plays. The most important of these performances was the Yunus Emre play, which he wrote and directed in 1979. For this achievement, he received the 2013 Yunus Emre award from Eskişehir Arts Association. Starting in 1992, he produced documentaries called The World of Photography for Eskişehir Süper TV which were aired regularly for three years. He prepared a booklet “Notes on Photography” and distributed it to photo enthusiasts from his studio.

On 27 October 2014, he exhibited the photography archive “Ataturk and the Republic of Turkey in the French Press 70 Years Ago” at Espark and repeated the same exhibition on 27 December 2014 at Osmangazi University. He donated his archive as well as his camera and equipment collection to Eskişehir Odunpazarı Municipality.

I gather the cameras, equipment and photos of the museum were from his donation.
