Photographer's Note
TO HRANT DINK (ARARAT)
Hrant Dink was shot dead on the 19th of January 2007 aged 53, outside The Agos Newspaper offices in Istanbul.
Hrant Dink (September 15, 1954 - January 19, 2007) was born in Malatya. He was best known for his role as editor of 'Agos' Armenian Language weekly in Istanbul. He worked as the columnist and editor-in chief of AGOS weekly newspaper, which can be regarded as the voice of Armenian community, from 1996 until January 19, 2007 when he was shot dead outside of his office.
At the age of seven, he migrated to İstanbul together with his family.
He got his primary and secondary education in Armenian schools. Immediately after lyceum, he got married.
He graduated from Zoology Department of İstanbul University’s Science Faculty. Then he continued his education at Philosophy Department of the same universitiy’s Literature Faculty for a while.
He tried to make AGOS newspaper a democrat and oppositional voice of Turkey and also to share the injustices done to Armenian community with public opinion.
One of the major aims of the newspaper is to contribute to dialogue between Turkish and Armenian nations and also between Turkey and Armenia.
He took part in various democratic platforms and civil society organizations.
He was charged and convicted of insulting Turkishness in Turkey, charges which he denied.
Biblical Mount Ararat (Armenian Արարատ; Turkish Ağrı Dağı; Kurdish Çîyayê Agirî) The higher mountain, 5,137 metres (16,854 ft) elevation is a snow-capped dormant volcanic cone, located in the far east of Turkey, 16 km west of Iran and 32 km south of Armenia. The Book of Genesis identifies this mountain range as the resting place of Noah's Ark after the Great Flood described there.
The smaller (3896 m) cone, Little Mount Ararat, rises just southeast of the bigger peak. The lava plateau stretches out between the two pinnacles. Ararat is a stratovolcano, formed of lava flows and pyroclastic ejecta.

Merhaba Mahmut.
I adore Turkey-yet still certain laws about insulting 'Turkishness' leave me to wonder about certain aspects of her social & judicial system.
Anyhow-cok buyuk thanks for making us aware of Hrant Dink- his works & life.
With respect, David.

Merhaba Mahmut bey,
evet, Hrant Dink`i saygiyla aniyoruz....
what happened today was a huge tragedy for democracy-loving people, especially for Turks, Armenians and Kurds.
What was Dink`s fault, why he got killed?
I am very sad about him, but mostly about Turkey because it destroys its image itself.
I don`t know who killed Hrant, and why he killed him. But I know that it was wrong.
It`s a shame..........
Böyle bir not verdigim icin özür dilerim. Ama umarim okuyanlar beni anlayacaktir.
Keske bu aci günü yasamasaydik diyorum.
Hrant gibi degerli gazetecilerimizi bu sekilde kaybetmeseydik.
Resim cok güzel, elinize saglik

Nice picture of this superb mountain, which I have seen many times but only from the other side.
It should not separate but unite people !
And strong from you to conmemorate in this way the brutal murder on writer Hrant Dink. Turkey visibly has problems to cope with its past, but I'm convinced not all people in Turkey think or act in the same way.

Hello Mahmut. I heard about this event in the news, and you chose a beautful photo for the rememberance. The atmosphere with the reddish light is well captured, and the snow-capped mountains rising above the landscape provide a peaceful and majestic impression.

Hi Mahmut,
beautiful shot of this very impressive landscape. But the best is your comment and the intention behind it.
What happend is really sad. My hope is that this event will become a boomerang for those people who ideologically paved the way for this crime and will strengthen the democratic and liberal forces in Turkey at the end.
Best regards

Hi Mahmut.
The picture itself is incredibely beautiful, but after reading your note, it lets a kind of a bitter-sweet taste... Bitter, because, of course, this story shows how commonly people who want to see justice progressing in our world are commonly victims of those who get profits from inequity; and sweet because the photo itself is to my opinion very optimistic with it's incredible colors and could let us hope for better periods.
Thanks for this document.

Hello Mahmut,
I find it very thoughtful to post this picture in a tribute to the late Hrant Dink.
I wish all the medias and press did understand the value of this man before he was shot. You couldn't find a better occasion to post this pretty picture.

Merhaba Mahmut!
This is an amazing shot, greatly composed with beautiful colours! An excellent job! But what "touched" the most is your note about the murder of a fellow journalist. I 've been working as a journalist the last 10 years and I can never get used to news about "friends" that lose their life simply because the are trying to do their job. A wonderful tribute!
Congratulations!

It is nicely symbolic to post a photo of mount Ararat with a sadly lightened peak in the red sky. A thoughtful association can be seen here.

Great tribute to this great man. I think you are a brave person for bringing these issues forward.
I also love Turkey and I hope to see it in the EU one day, although like others I am quite shocked at the level of nationalism prevalent there.
About the photo, it is a great landscape showing the maejesty of the mountains with a beautiful sky in the background, although I find it jus t alittle bit dark, maybe you can play with the exposure.
