Photographer's Note

A few million years ago, volcanic eruptions resulted in soft, tufa-rock formations that create an almost surreal look in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. At sunrise, several hot-air balloons fly over Goreme Valley for a spectacular view of this phenomenon. From the ground, you can explore several cave dwellings, underground cities, fresco-painted chapels, and fairy chimneys (pigeon houses).
