Photographer's Note

A wind eroded rock arch in Hasankeyf, eastern Turkey. Someone has scratched PKK onto the arch at right. PKK was the Kurdistan Workers Party. There was a bitter struggle for more autonomy between the 1980's and the end of 2012. "In 2013, the PKK accepted a ceasefire agreement and began slowly withdrawing its fighters to the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq as part of the so-called "solution process" between the Turkish state and the long-disenfranchised Kurdish minority." (Wikipedia). This plateau is about 1 km from the town, and to get to Hasankeyf you drop down along a trail framed by the arch. The bg caves were formerly inhabited, but now they are only visited by wandering goats and sheep.
