Iztuzu Lagoon, a photo from Mugla, Aegean

Photographer's Note

A quiet section of Iztuzu Lagoon where the mini Everglades meets the sea. You can work out where the sea breezes come from by the leaning tree. There is an urban myth that parts of the movie African Queen were filmed in the swamp near here, filling in for the Sud area on the Nile. But it turns out that claim is false. Here's an aerial shot of the marshlands, lagoon and beach.

The beach is famous for turtle nesting. There have been a couple of attempts to build huge resorts on the beach, but both times they have failed & environmentalists have won.

Hello Chris,
It was surprising news that parts of the African Queen should have been shot in Turkey. Indeed I found this on Wikipedia: "A myth has grown that the scenes in the reed-filled riverbank were filmed in Dalyan, Turkey.[16] But Katharine Hepburn's published book (p. 118) on the filming states 'We were about to head... back to Entebbe, but John [Huston] wanted to get shots of Bogie and me in the miles of high reeds before we come out into the lake...". The reeds sequence was thus shot on location in Africa (Uganda and Congo) and London studios." The IMDb also categorically states that the film was shot in Congo, Uganda and studios in London and LA. Noting about Turkey.
Never mind, some myths will live on forever, and the beauty of this scenery African or not will also live forever. That bent tree is a great eye-catcher.

I think what make this shot special is, the unusual shape of the hardy bending tree exposed to the elements but remains unbreakable. It fits the frame as appropriate. Good observation, nice grab.

Quel bel endroit. Le plan d'eau est beau ainsi que la végétation qui semble bien variée. Les montagnes en arričre plan offrent un trčs beau cadre idyllique.

hello Chris, This place looks wild, with no tourists. I am very glad that environmentalists have won the battle. The place would lose its character. I hate big resorts. have you seen the turtles here?

Very nice capture of this wonderfull beach in Dalyan.
Perfect pov and layout as well as sharpness.
I remember when I was there for the first time more than 20 years ago and kept there guard for almost a week, to protect the caretta caretta's.
Than just by coincidence we had learned that those animals was been irritated by the lights of a new built 5 star hotel in the region !
