Photographer's Note

The official name is "Karağalar Hamamı" (The Black Aghas' [Masters'] Hammam). "The Black Masters" is a polite way of referring to the the black eunuchs employed in the harem of the Ottoman palace, though the title is not far from the truth. The black eunuchs had a higher status then the white eunuchs. Kızlar Ağası (the Agha of the Girls) was the chief black eunuch. This post was established in 1574 and ranked among the most important in the Ottoman Empire until the early 19th century. The stewardship of the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina and the supervision of all charitable foundations (vakifs) in the Empire came under his purview. He was the only officer permitted to request an audience with the sultan at any time.
