Buyukada or Proti in the largest of Prince Isalnds
The Princes' Islands, a half-hour's voyage southeast of Istanbul 20 km (10.5 miles) southeast of the city center in the Sea of Marmara.
Byzantine emperors sent bothersome princes to these islands to rot, so foreigners call them the Princes' Islands.
In the 19th century the islands became a favorite summer resort for wealthy Istanbullu families, most of them non-Muslim. who built elaborate Victorian summer cottages along the narrow island-village streets. This villas and a few hotels still harbor well-to-do summer residents, and many more visitors come on day excursions from the city.
The islands which are free of cars and have many beautiful wooden houses, have a resort atmosphere and offer peace and quiet in a natural environment. Walks or tours with horse-carriages through the streets of the islands, restaurants or cafes in this peaceful atmosphere are among the simple joys to be found on these islands.
