A man and his goats, a photo from Hadramawt, East

Photographer's Note

At least for the time being I have left the Balkans and returned to the boxes stored in my wardrobe. I didn't have to dig very deep to reach my journey to Yemen, just over 13 years ago, in 1998.

This photo doesn't need many comments, a man tending his young goats in a street of the southern city of Al Mukalla.

This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide. My camera in those days was a Canon F1.

The man, in his bright Hawaii shirt, seems to be very fond of all his goats. Maybe he treats them like his pets... Still, a very pleasant daily life street view with lots of colours!

Hello Gert. Arabia Felix - a photo from Yemen. Yes, the land is exotic and backward. But the people are friendly, humorous and fair. I remember really very glad to Yemen and the people there. The man in the photo is really something special. And his way of dressing is not typical for the country. This makes the photo worth seeing in an entertaining way. Rgds, Wolfgang.

Hello Gert,

First the Kodachrome 25, then the Kodachrome 64 were my choice of analogue films for color fidelity, durability and sharpness. You've done an excellent job of converting the slide to digital form. A year before you shot this image, I had sailed out of Mumbai, first for Dubai, then onto Yemen, before entering the Red Sea, and eventually the Mediterranean. Things started heating up later in 1997 with the attack on the US Navy ship "The Cole," then the massacre of tourists at Queen Hapshetsut's Tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Did you feel the anti-European sentiment while you were in Yemen?

I was already missing your "photos from the wardrobe" :)
and here is one more - picturesque, exotic (to me) and filled with many interesting details.
Though I understand that this photo is dedicated mainly to the old man with his goats, I still wish those people in the background were not 'headless'! but taking into account the POV, it was impossible to include more space into the frame...
what is interesting (or, maybe, it is a rule for all your portrait photos?), the old man who looking at the photographer (you) doesn't mind his photo being taken.
hmm ..the goats are cute :)

Very nice shot with the man and his goats. Looks like he is very much attached to these baby goats. These people in many ways dress and look like Indians from India. I feel so connected with this shot. I like the way the man is sitting and posing for you. A lovely daily shot from this country.

It is always a pleasure to view your 'old' slides! You have the most amazing collection of street images - perhaps the most extensive on this planet? Again there seems to be no deterioration over 13 years. Pity about the 2 headless men but there is still much to see in the background. Perfect scanned picture, very well done.
This is a very lively shot with full of atmosphere.

Another shot depicting the way of life in this part of the world. The goat were so skinny and not enought nutrition.

this is a charmimg image. I like the way the man sits in a position to anchor the image.I like that he looks directly at you with an enigmatic smile.I like too the contrast of the patterns of his shirt to the more traditional textiles on show.And of course the tiny goats are very cute.

Another informative street life picture from this less known place, full of activity. He looks friendly though no doubt and nicely posed and his pets. A bright characterful fig, and you have done well to control it to convey the real atmosphere. This works well too for the colorful background detail you included The overall colors are reasonably good. A hectic streetscene well captured, excellent archiving and TFS

Hello Gert,
a very interesting and quaint picture. I like very much the way it is composed with the gentleman placed on the left side of the frame and the perspectives opening up past him to a rich view into the street. He is tending his little goats like someone would do with his cats or dogs in a greek neighbourhood. The movement by the people behind him is interesting but they are faceless and he holds our glance with his very strongly. Lighting and colours give a special atmosphere and allure to the picture, a unique style. Congratulations and thank you!
