Photographer's Note
Each February, some of the world's top ice climbers come to the small town of Pont-Rouge for the Festiglace competitions to demonstrate the exhilaration of their sport.
Held along a beautiful canyon section of the Jacques Cartier river, the climbers and spectators are in awe with the raw beauty of these ice formations which hang precariously on the face of tall cliffs.
Unfortunately for photograghers, there was a blinding blizzard yesterday which made for difficult conditions to work in.Furthermore the absence of sun didn't help in finding contrasts.
There was one section of the wall however that I found quite eye pleasing with the strong aqua blue colouring in the ice.You can see in the top right side how different it is when the ice is stained with the runoff from the slate stone.
This is the second year in a row that we have been without sun for this event...but I am never really disappointed with what there is to see as these climbers face their personal challenges of making it to the top of their chosen destination.
I increased contrast by 15% and sharpened.
I have a photo from last year's competition which you can find by clicking HERE

Impressive capture. The lines of the ice "curtain" sits well in the frame, the bit of black in the lower left corner adds depth and the climber has a nice posture, very good.

Good action here. The cyan color in the ice gives a cooling effect. Great shot Derek. composition is also very well-done as the patterns ofn the left balances out the man on the right.

Great capture. Reminds of a post 'Steeve' made some time back. Perhaps his last one.

I like very much your photo of this year. The dynamics of legs, rope, peaks (piolet and hoof) is very beautiful and the colour of ices going from the pink to the blue is magnificent. Well done.
J'aime beaucoup votre photo de cette année. La dynamique des jambes, de la corde, des pics (piolet et sabot) est trčs belle et la couleur des glaces allant du rose au bleu est magnifique. Trčs bien fait.

Great shot. You really took this pic when the climber was in a very technical position. The framing is good as it lets us see the nice blue ice. I prefer this color of ice than the one at Montmorency falls which is yellow.

What a great addition to my theme on climbing. I had to work last weekend so I missed the festiglace. I am glad that you where there and you can give a little taste of it.
You have gotten a great shot here Derek, specially with the bad winter conditions that we had on saturday. I love the position of the climber and your angle is perfect. Nicely done.

Very interesting notes, Derek. The subject is appealing, and you've catch the best of it. Not easy to get the ice with so many different shades, avoiding overexposure. The climber is so sharp that there is a 3D effect here. Very good action shot!
