Photographer's Note
With a recent heat wave taking its toll on human comfort, what better way to refresh the mind and body by heading into the churning waters of northern Quebec.
The Shipshaw River near Lac St.Jean offers some very exciting whitewater rapids for canoeing and kayaking. This particular set of rapids, known as Le Caribou, is very challenging for whitewater enthusiasts because there is only one narrow line of attack which allows you to make it through the huge "boiler" at the bottom. To be be able to "punch" through this section, you must hang as close as possible to the dark edge on the right where the water meets the foam.
Beleive it or not there are actually two people in this canoe. They are rising out of the deep hole and heading to a safe landing.
Just for the record, when it was my turn to go down in a solo canoe, I missed my "line" by a few inches and tipped sideways into the awaiting hole which was gleeful in giving me a good thrashing before spitting me out into the downstream current . But oh, how refreshing it was :-)
