Photographer's Note

This was taken from Signal Hill, St.John's, Newfoundland. It is an area of the City that many photographers favour, for it's colourful flavor. I hope you like my rendition, as I feel it bring's to life the vibrant colours of the city.

Some interesting and not so interesting facts about the City.

- It is the most Easterly point in the Americas.

- The oldest European settlement in North America, founded on the feast of St. John the Baptist, June 24, 1497.

-Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown, in a modified Vimy IV, made the first non-stop aerial crossing of the Atlantic. They took off from Lester's Field, St. Johns, Newfoundland on June 14,1919, and landed June 15,1919, at Clifden in Ireland. The time for the crossing was sixteen hours, twenty-seven minutes.

-The first transatlantic wireless radio transmission was received by Guglielmo Marconi, on Dec. 12, 1901.

-The oldest surviving Street in North America, Water Street.

-St.John's was destroyed by fire on July 8, 1892, the cause was a dropped smoking pipe in Timothy Brine's stable. Thus, most of what you see in this photo was constructed after this date.

- The accent spoken by the citizens is very similar to the South part of Ireland.

-The oldest continuous sporting event in North America is the St. John's Regatta, held on the first Wednesday of August.

-It was at St. John's that the first known letter was sent from North America. On August 3, 1527, John Rut wrote a letter to King Henry on his findings of his voyage to North America.

-On March 31, 1949, Newfoundland officially became part of Canada, thus making St.John's the last major city to join the Confederation of Canada.

-St.John's has three types of weather, RAIN, DRIZZLE, OR FOG. Not totally accurate, but if you decide to visit this colourful City, prepare for the worst during any time of the year.
