Photographer's Note

Palenque is one incredible place. It is well-preserved though the Maya lived here from 100 BC to the early 10th century and its best years were between AD 600 and 750 when it was a regional capital. Everything here was built without metal tools, animals or wheel.

El Palacio (The Palace) is actually a complex of courtyards, corridors and rooms. Tower (built in the 8th century, restored in the 20th) is what distinguish it from other buildings and the structure probably served as astronomical observatory or lookout post. Different kings in different times each added a little bit to the complex. The Palace, like it name says, was probably reserved for the royal family and their immediate entourage.

The photo shows the Patio de los Cautivos (Patio of the Captives).
