Photographer's Note

San Cristobal de Las Casas is a magical little town in a small valley. Colorful as colorful typical central American ex-colonial towns are, it is inhabited by a small elite with strong connection to Spain, a vast middle class who are descendants of Spanish settlers that intermarried with the indigenous population--these are the main movers of the local economy here--against a backdrop of Mayan people who live on the fringes of the society. Of course there are many exceptions to this general stratification.

It is pure delight to walk the nearly deserted streets of San Cristobal de LC early in the morning and see the beautiful color on chiefly one-storied buildings glow in the rising sun.

We went there by a five-hour long bus ride from Palenque.
