Photographer's Note

Travelling in Mexico, Death is never far away.

Which other country (apart from maybe Belgium?) would have a procession of skeletons to celebrate its national day? A merry carnaval of bones!

Death is present, not just on the Day of the Dead, but in everyday life. Have you ever tried the Bread of Death (pan de la muerto)? Or got on a metro ride to the Baranca de los Muertos? Oh, where but in Mexico?

This picture was taken at the National Museum of Antropology in Mexico City. Most museums in Mexico display at least a handful of skeletons. Most of them have been excavated from pre-hispanic times, and often very little is actually known about them.

The National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City contains the world's largest collection of ancient Mexican art and also has ethnographic exhibits about Mexico's present-day indigenous groups. There is a hall dedicated to each of the cultural regions of Mesoamerica and the ethnological exhibits are located on the second floor. You could easily spend a full day, but you should at least dedicate a few hours to exploring this museum.

PS: Did you know Mexico City claims to have more museums than any other city in the world?

You know everything comes to a standstill
nothing seems to make a turn
cause the worm's still waitin' for the early bird
and the early bird's waitin' for the worm

And nobody wants to do nothing
just waiting for a finger in the pie
and waitin' for a call from a TV show
or waitin' for some rich uncle to die

Everybody's waitin' for something
and nothing ever turns out right
because the night shift is waiting for the morning
and the burglar is waiting for the night

and me, honey, I'm just waiting for some critiques...

lyrics by Mark E. Smith, in tribute to Hank Williams

...and waiting
