Photographer's Note

The Basler Herbstmesse or autumn fair is one of the oldest fairs in Europe. The first one was held in 1471 and thus is held this year for the 542 time.
The fair consist of several different parts such as a trade fair, a aniques fair and a wine fair. But most important for the almost 1 million visitors to the fair is the amusement park. It isn't a amusement park as such but rather different places in the city that are transformed for 2 weeks with rides from simple old style childrens carusells to the wildest rides such as a 66m high free fall tower.
Especialle the place in front of the Basler Münster that during most of the year is one of the quietest places in the city, offering a great view over the city is transformed in a place of fun and laughter. Here we see a wave swinger contrasting with its neon lights to the serene Basler Münster, built in 1091.
