Castel di Tora - Rieti

It is located on the artificial lake of Turano, overlooking it with a fantastic view of landscapes of great beauty.
Until 1864 it was called Castel Vecchio (Castrum Vetus) and the inhabitants are still called "castelvecchiesi".
The new name refers to the ancient and famous Sabine city of Thora, of uncertain location, later a Roman pagus.
Castel di Tora is mentioned for the first time in the Farfa documents of 1035 with the name of "Castrum Vetus de Ophiano", probably its origins are slightly older, deriving from the first phase of the phenomenon of fortifications following the Saracen raids of the IX and 10th century.
The strategic position of the castle, suitably integrated by the defensive system of the fortified village of Antuni and by watchtowers, allowed complete control over the valley below, not yet covered by the lake's waters.
