Photographer's Note

I find it hard to leave India, so I remain in the memories of my many journeys to that great country.

This is from late 1991, when I travelled through the interior of India, from Bombay to Calcutta. The cultural highlight was probably the couple of days I spent in Khajuraho in a remote area of Madhya Pradesh state. Khajuraho is famous for the about 20 Hindu and Jain temples remaining of the 85 originally built here from the 10th to 12th centuries. They are spread out over a fairly large area around an ordinary small town.

This is the Matangeshwar temple, finished in the year 1000 and dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. It is still being used by worshippers, not just by tourists.

Here is a larger version.

You can see two more photos from Khajuraho as workshops. One shows a small temple with a small crowd of mainly local visitors, the other a temple, water and birds.

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

The approximate location is shown in the Map: view.
