Admiring the lights..., a photo from New York, Northeast

Photographer's Note

Tourists who come to NYC during the Christmas season usually visit the more famous holiday sights: the tree at Rockefeller Center, the window displays at major department stores, the holiday markets, etc. In Brooklyn, another sight is becoming more popular every year: the amazing displays on houses in the Brooklyn neighborhood called Dyker Heights.

Dyker Heights is a predominantly Italian-American neighborhood in southwest Brooklyn, and since the 1980's, residents have been decorating their homes with huge displays of lights, animated figures, statues, and much more. Some displays also include music. The entire neighborhood participates, and, in some cases, home owners even compete with each other to see who can make the most elaborate display.

The past few years, there have been bus tours to see the displays in Dyker Heights, and foreign tourists have even started to visit.

This photo was taken in Brooklyn, but in a different neighborhood. Every year, this particular house is covered completely with lights. They have several outdoor displays that include a ferris wheel, a carousel, ice skating puppets, and much more. They also play Christmas music. Visitors stop by every night to admire the lights and enjoy the holiday spirit. I also stop by every year, and I took this photo a few days ago on Christmas night. :-)

Hello Brenda,
Very nice capture to the theme X-Mas !
Good layout and good ligth management. The silhouttes in the foreground adds a certain dynamism to the scenery.

Hi Brenda, i can imagine how children admire this decoration. The view is delightful. Excellent Chritmas potcard. I like including the dark silhouettes. Fantastic place.

What a beautiful and inviting photo. I love the warm lights and the colours. THe sense of Christmas celebrated in cold weather such as this is so foreign to me, our Christmas being of course in the middle of Summer. So it really is a treat to see. Lovely shot, very American and beautifully presented.

I had missed this seasonal shot, and a beauty it is. The silhouettes of the window watchers is, I believe, an essential element in elevating the photo from a colorful window display to a work of art. I like it very much.
