Photographer's Note

Jenne Farm, 15 minutes south of Woodstock, VT, is reputed to be the most photographed farm in New England, perhaps all of North America. Amateur and professional photographers flock to this farm in fall and winter to get the shot which has become an icon of New England farms. Jenne Farm was discovered by a photography school in 1955, has been on the cover of magazines, has appeared in a Budweiser commercial as well as a setting in movies such as Forrest Gump and Funny Farm.
The ideal time to shoot the farm is prior to 10AM. Unfortunately, my schedule did not allow for that and I arrived early afternoon. In the autumn there is nearly always a line of photographers waiting their turn to get a shot, and it was no different this day for me. While disappointed with the light, I still waited patiently for my turn to get a few shots from the classic POV. Then, as I turned to leave, I saw this view of several cows, lazing in the sun, oblivious to the huge “Nor’easter storm” moving toward them from the south. I was taken with how the color of these cattle matched the autumn landscape colors. The color soon changed to white as this mid-October storm dumped 12 inches of snow on central Vermont the next day.
