Photographer's Note

Salt spray causes decay on north wall of Fort Jefferson located on one of those islands (Garden Key)that form the Dry Tortugas Ntl. Park.
The Park lies at the farthest end of the Florida Keys, closer to Cuba than the American mainland, so one must travel by boat or plane over 68 nautical miles of open sea.
Fort Jefferson, built in the mid-1800's with over 16 million bricks, is the America's largest coastal fort and was constructed to protect the important Gulf of Mexico shipping lanes....but was never attacked.
Nevertheless it fulfilled its intended role of protecting peace and prosperity of Nation.
Then after, during the Civil War, Fort Jefferson was used as a military prison.
