Photographer's Note

The Bodie Island Lighthouse was originally constructed in 1847 to supplement the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a number of miles to the south. The original tower was 54 feet, but having a faulty foundation, it soon began to teeter. Two years later it had to be abandoned.

In 1859, a second structure was completed. But soon after its completion, the US Civil war began and Confederate forces, fearing the new 80 foot towers usefulness to the Union, it was blown it up in 1861.

Finally, in 1872, the current structure was completed. It is 156 feet tall and Its beacon has a range of 19 miles. It still serves today, however ownership of the light has been transferred to US Park Service who maintains it today.

Great perspective of this lighthouse. The B&W paint over this is looking great. Glad to know that this is still in use thats why it is very well presered.

Hi NedI'm back

Another of my favourit things..lighthouses, and this is a beauty. Most, if not all lighthouses are today unmanned, and I always had a romantic notion that it must have been a great job, especially off-shore, being by the sea in all weathers, with giant waves crashing off the foundations, watching for ships, and the best seat in the house for sunrises & sunsets. Lonely job, maybe, but some of us don't mind being alone. And the interiors of lighthouses are something else, stunning woodwork.
